Deregistering a Dog in Switzerland: Step-by-Step Guide

Not just registering, but also deregistering a dog is mandatory in Switzerland. Forgetting this step can result in unjustified dog tax bills for an animal that no longer lives in your household.

When do I need to deregister my dog?

• Death of the dog: deregister within the municipality's deadline, usually 10 to 30 days
• Sale or transfer: the new owner must register in their municipality; you deregister in yours
• Moving abroad: deregister with your municipality and update AMICUS

Step 1: Reporting in AMICUS

The death, sale or export of a dog must be reported within ten days in the national AMICUS database, usually via your vet practice.

Step 2: Deregistering with your municipality

Most municipalities also require formal deregistration with the residents' registration office or dog control office.
